#SpookyDaze ahead

spookydaze[1]

I’ve loved Hallowe’en since the first time I slid into a Ben Cooper mask.

For me, Hallowe’en has always been all about magic, mystery, and the macabre.

When I think of Hallowe’en I think of ghost stories around a campfire, plastic pumpkins filled with candy, corn mazes and hay rides, and late night strolls through my favorite cemeteries.

Knowing my passion for all things All Hallows, my friends at Cozy Daze have invited me to help promote their newest venture — Spooky Daze — and I jumped at the chance.

Very soon, Spooky Daze will be offering an amazing line of products, including life-size polyresin statues of iconic horror figures, Hallowe’en-themed furniture, spooky lighting, scary decorations, and more.

frankThese items make for great photo-ops and eye-catching displays, guaranteed to draw people in, whether you’re running a haunted attraction or Hallowe’en event.

And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t love to have a 7′ Frankenstein in their house. I’m making room in my den even as we speak.

I’ll post a link to their site as soon as they’re up and running. Believe me, you’ll want to check it out.

84 days till Hallowe’en… Are you ready? I know I am.

The Spirit of Hallowe’en

storyteller

Last night, while I was out of town for something of a clandestine writers meeting, my ten year old son regaled his similarly aged cousins with a Hallowe’en poem he wrote for the occasion. Needless to say, I couldn’t be more proud. And you know what, I think Neil Gaiman would be too. It is what All Hallow’s Read is all about — the sharing of stories.

allhallowsread2Connor is a naturally gifted storyteller. That he put so much thought into this and shared his gift with others at this time of year warms my heart. He has a bright (and dark) future ahead of him.

allhallowsreadSo, my friends, take this as a challenge. It is All Hallow’s Eve after all. Share your scary stories with your loved ones. Buy scary books and give them as gifts or write something dark and wondrous of your own… but share these stories. It plays to the very Spirit of Hallowe’en.

There’s just two days till Hallowe’en… Let’s make this year’s All Hallow’s Read something special.

Connor already has.

All Hallow’s Read

Posted in Archive with tags , , , , on October 28, 2010 by Occult Detective

Neil Gaiman was on a plane, his mind surely chewing over some deliciously dark and clever story idea, when a stray thought took root.  “You know, there aren’t enough traditions that involve giving books.” And from this simple kernel has sprung All Hallow’s Read (#AllHallowsRead on twitter). So here’s his line of thinking:  “I propose that, on Hallowe’en or during the week of Hallowe’en, we give each other scary books. Give children scary books they’ll like and can handle. Give adults scary books they’ll enjoy.” Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? How could I not take part in something like this? It shall henceforth become a new tradition, one as necessary as carving pumpkins or digging up graves out at the old Hog’s Back boneyard.

So here’s how we’re going to do it here on The Occult Detective. You’re going to respond to this post and tell me what your favorite part of Hallowe’en is. Maybe it’s the candy, or the costumes, or the horror movies, or, maybe — just maybe — it’s because you know that the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Regardless, all you have to do is email your response to allhallowsread@occultdetective.com and you are entered to win a free book from yours truly.

What am I giving away? How about Fresh Blood, that gnarly little anthology from Burning Effigy Press featuring my story “Mourn Not the Sleepless Children”? Hell, I’ll even sign it for you. And to make the deal even sweeter, I’ll inscribe a bit of flash fiction inside and drop an arcane sigil on the page while sitting in a candlelit room inside one of the most haunted locations in all of Indiana. Who knows, maybe I’ll be sending you something more than just a free book?

I will select a winner at one minute before the stroke of midnight on All Hallow’s Eve.
