Lucifer is Coming
As one DC Occult property bids farewell, another spreads its (infernal) wings.
Based on the Vertigo character created by Neil Gaiman and largely written by Mike Carey, Lucifer will be debuting on FOX in 2016. According to wikipedia, the series will focus on Lucifer, “who is bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell and resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the beauty of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals.”
Fans of the comic have been less than thrilled by the stated premise of the tv series, seeing as how it is a stretch to see anything of the comic in it, beyond the main character.
In Carey’s comic take, Lucifer Morningstar is the proprietor of “Lux”, a piano bar in LA and the writer tackles some weighty subjects, mostly regarding free will and predestination. This is in contrast to the tv show’s “police procedural” motif… Seeing why the comic fans would take umbrage is understandable.
I’ll give it a shot, however. I’ve always been more than willing to give the devil his due. It would be nice to see Matt Ryan show up as John Constantine though, you know, for a drink and a bit of a laugh.
I am, as they say, gutted that Constantine was given the proverbial ax. Sure, it started rough, but man, did it hit its stride later on. Sad to see it go. Will Lucifer have what it takes to fill the void? Doubtful, but making Lucifer something of an occult detective isn’t such a bad thing, now it is?
