History Channel’s Vikings

Vikings is one of only a handful of shows that unfailingly captures my attention. I dare say, it just might be my favorite. It certainly ticks all the right boxes.

More than just a “sword & sandal” epic, Vikings, in attempting to breathe life into the historical sagas of the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok, has delivered a tale rich in detail, with vivid and vibrant cinematography and compelling writing. And the actors have been nothing short of brilliant.

Yes, its an action-filled adventure, but it deftly delves into the beating hearts of these characters and the raw emotion of their sometimes savage world, played out in a time when a cunning wit kept you alive and your prowess with an axe and shield stayed the hand of death.

Vikings has been a series infused with love, hate, loyalty, betrayal, and, at its core, a devotion to family and a deep spirituality unlike anything else on television.

Season 2 has come to a close and Ragnar has navigated the treacherous waters in his “Game of Thrones”. Season 3 has a lot to live up to. In a mere 19 episodes, Vikings has managed to set the stage for what is sure to be the best season yet to come.

As a student of Heathenry and Northern European Culture, Vikings the Series, despite a few missteps, has provided an intimate and fascinating glimpse into the world of these magnificent Northmen. If you’re not along for this ride, by the gods, you damn well should be.
