Random Thoughts on the Preternatural

Some would say that the visions of altered states of consciousness are just “our brains on drugs” but after more than fifty journeys with Ayahuasca I have had experiences that lead me to think otherwise. I can’t prove it, of course, but my bet is these entities are real and exist in dimensions that are normally closed off to our consciousness unless we induce radically altered states.” — Graham Hancock

“To make this mundane world sublime,
Take half a gram of phanerothyme
To fathom Hell or soar angelic,
Just take a pinch of psychedelic.”
— Osmond & Huxley

Gods and Devils, Angels and Demons, Wights, Spirits, and Fairy Folk… Our myths and legends are filled with stories of preternatural beings and of learned men and women — be they seers, sorcerers, mystics, necromancers, shamans or the like — who sought communion with them.

“We move among invisible forms whose actions
we very often do not perceive at all though we
may be profoundly affected by them.”
— Dion Fortune

“Gods die. And when they truly die they are
unmourned and unremembered.”
— Neil Gaiman, American Gods

Just to be clear, there’s nothing up my sleeve, but just the same I’ve something to talk about today and that something is magic. More than magic, though, I’m thinking the whole enchilada — the grand design that includes those things that go bump in the night, as well as those brave souls who seek to enforce their will upon reality, and the entities that make-up the preternatural soup of the multi-verse and beyond.

Ah hell, let’s give it the respect it deserves… go ahead and add the k.

What’s that? You’re not a believer? Then guess what, it doesn’t exist for you. Doesn’t mean you’re not influenced by the machinations of unseen forces, merely that, for you, they will manifest as coincidences, or deja vu, or things that might be readily explained away by rational discourse.

But make that leap and acknowledge magic’s existence… open the doorway to the ethereal realms… and there’s no turning back. You stare long into that abyss and it does more than simply stare back. You’re marked. Sure, the world still looks the same on the surface, but in the shadows, guess again.

Of course there are a million definitions of magick under the moon and stars, and various practitioners like to stamp labels on everything — white, black, and gray — order and chaos — good, evil, and indifferent — not to mention the cavalcade of mystics, shamans, gnostics, pagans, heathens, witches, priests, and so on and so forth…

It’s a muddied mess, but that’s okay. The preternatural doesn’t mind, because it simply is.

So believe or not. The choice is yours.

As for me, I will cast myself adrift in a sea of possibilities and embrace the sacred and profane alike…
