Mountains of Madness

Somewhere, deep in the bowels of the John Hay Library at Brown University, is a tattered envelope, deconstructed and repurposed, upon which “At the Mountains of Madness” was born.

  1. This was originally part of the archives at Miskatonic University, but one overcast midnight in 1938 John Hay broke open the cellar window of the archive, crawled through and stole this fragment as well as fragments of two of the pganotic scrolls. Eventually, his study of these fragments caused John Hay to go insane, and after he failed to show up to instruct classes at Brown University the Dean and several others broke into his home and found the walls scrawled with arcane symbols. John Hay, however, had completely disappeared and all they found of him were a few symbols drawn in his own blood.

… or so I wildly and irresponsibly speculate, based on no known facts whatsoever.

  2. Still one of my all-time favorite stories. I’m such an HPL nerd.
