It’s been a while since I ruminated on Fringe, but there were some interesting things that came up in last night’s terrific episode. The show is quite good, despite miserable ratings, and has all the makings of being the successor to LOST. Except no one is watching.

Too bad. Kudos to FOX for keeping it alive. I can only hope that its DVD sales remain strong enough to warrant its continued production.

Okay, the things that caught my eye:

Leonard Nimoy as William Bell. Last night he was addressed by a nom de guerre… “Dr. Paris”. Significance? Well, Paris was the name of the character Nimoy played on one of my favorite shows as a kid, Mission:Impossible.

Now, let’s look at the villains, shall we.

Last night, the foil of our dynamic threesome was one Thomas Jerome Newton. Interesting in and of itself, but when coupled with a former antagonist, namely David Robert Jones, a pattern develops… What you ask?

David Robert Jones is the Christian name of one David Bowie, the same cat who starred in the cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth. The name of the alien that Bowie played in said film was none other that Thomas Jerome Newton.

A nice bit of symmetry there.

My hat is off to the writers for the playful inclusion of all three Easter Eggs.

Now, for those of you not watching: Shame on you. This is compelling television, dammit. Saddle yourself down and give it a go, if you please.

It is a superb sci-fi drama. A little bit X-Files. A little bit LOST. And a whole lot of good.
