Idris Elba of The Wire has been cast as Heimdall in the forthcoming Kenneth Branagh directed Thor movie for Marvel Studios.
Heimdall is the Guardian of the Bifrost Bridge and one of Odin’s most honored warriors. Called the “whitest of the gods”, it is Heimdall who is destined to soundĀ Gjallarhorn when Ragnarok begins and to slay Loki as the world ends.
He is said to have hearing so acute that he can hear grass grow and the fall of a single leaf anywhere in the world… and eyesight that allows him to see tothe far corners of the world and beyond.
Heimdall is the living embodiment of endurance and vigilence for he never sleeps.

But one can hope… The casting seems okay on the surface, though I would have preferred Brian Blessed over Hopkins in the titular role of the Allfather… still, Sir Anthony should be able to pull it off.

A stroll down nostalgia lane today as I came away with a veritable treasure trove of iconic childhood memories… and best of all it cost me nothing. We traded in some old Life Magazine coffee table books and in exchange received portals into worlds of mystery, magic, and wonder.

It’s a sad day in the world of comics as legendary penciler George Tuska and celebrated letterer Joe Rosen are both mourned.
George Tuska was a staple in the comics industry, from his early days working on such illustrious titles as Captain Marvel and a long run on the Buck Rogers comic strip.
His work on Iron Man and Captain America for Marvel has been much heralded, but for me, it was his work on Planet of the Apes and Thor that really grabbed me.
As to Joe Rosen, what can be said about this man of letters? In what is perhaps the most unheralded position in the industry, Joe Rosen defined the art of lettering comics.
Rosen’s work was perfection, bringing clarity and musclature to his line and enhancing every title that he worked on. This was most evident in his groundbreaking work on Frank Miller’s legendary run on Daredevil.
Rest in Peace, Gentlemen and thanks for the memories…

In a continuation of yesterday’s geek out on comics… today, my inner nerd escaped. Yes, that is a picture of a whole boatload of TSR product… mostly Dungeons & Dragons and Forgotten Realms rule books, modules, and box sets.
I played religiously from 1978 to 1996 or so, originally catching the bug when I attended the Oak Hill Dungeons and Dragons Club’s gaming demonstration at the late, great Redbeard’s Books.
It was a lot of fun and helped instill in me the storytelling skillset that serves me today as an author.
This stuff’s being moved from one storage area to another, but one day I expect it will get dusted off and the dice will fly once more… this time with my son sitting at the table and most likely playing a half-ogre fighter/thief hellbent on stealing the Crown Jewels of Waterdeep and selling them to the Lich King of Neverwinter Woods.
Today’s agenda…

… is to sort through this box of comics and wax nostalgic for the glory days of youth and the thrill of larger than life adventures told in four colors.
