Enochia
So, my wife challenged me to write a page a day throughout 2013 so that by the end of the year I’d have a 365 page novel, but the catch was she wanted something different. I started and, as my mind is wont to do, the story became one about Landon Connors. That just wouldn’t do, she said. And she was, as always, right. Landon Connors is what I do. This experiment needed to be different, per her instructions. Well, today I filed the Connors story away, to be worked on along with the various other “in progress” stories piling up, and I began something all together different, because if anything I do aim to please.
I’ve threatened to write an occult detective novel in a fantasy setting for a long time. That project has now become a part of my wife’s 365 day challenge. I did have some catching up to do, so I had to write three pages today to get the stars in their proper alignment, but first I needed a world in which to operate. I created the above map and I’m now fully invested in seeing this grand experiment through.
And you know what, I’m having a blast. The hard part is going to be in keeping the reins tight and not throwing myself into it completely. That would be cheating. So here we go, into the grim and fantastical world of Enochia.
Fantasy was my first love. Howard, Tolkien, Moorcock, and the like. Will be fun to take that childhood affliction, introduce it to my adult passion, and see where that magical road leads.
Addendum: Talk about synchronicity. Today is JRR Tolkien’s birthday. I find it somewhat fitting that Enochia draws its first breath on the 131st anniversary of the Ringmaster’s nativity.

If the story starts with a map, I am roped in ;-)
You do realize that somewhere in your 365 pages, you simply must work in an homage to “It was funnier in Enochian,” yes?m
