“What’s Up, Tiger Mommy?”

Supernatural

Season 8 Episode 2

“What’s Up, Tiger Mommy?”

Man, I’m tired. I’ve been up for a couple of days now with only a few short nap hours to keep my mind from being more than an attic full of sauerkraut. It’s been mostly because of work (two days of network upgrades), but also, to a lesser degree, because of some minor (and not so minor) issues with both family and friends. Seems like everyone around me is sick, be it undiagnosed physical ailments or creeping mental illnesses. It weighs on the soul, and in an odd sort of way, catching up with the Winchesters this week, I see that same weight pressing down on these fictional characters and feel my own weight lifted just a little bit, at least for an hour or so.

“Mr. Crowley, you don’t have a soul.”
— The God Plutus

Season Eight continues to press on in fine form. A definite improvement over Seasons Six and Seven. So far, so good. Any time Supernatural trots out a plethora of demons, angels, gods, and whatnot I get that Neil Gaiman / American Gods vibe, and that’s a good thing. Are they always respectful to the various faiths represented? Certainly not, but I don’t have a problem with it. It’s their version of the metaphysical world. As long as they stay consistent in their universe, it’s all good.

I really dug the Plutus Auction. Hell, seeing Sam wield Mjolnir was worth the price of admission alone, but the soul of the episode was carried by Dean and his visions of Purgatory. Dean’s suffering through some serious Post Traumatic Stress. War is Hell, as they say, and the elder Winchester lived through it in that very dark and scary place. Getting a glimpse into his Heart of Darkness and seeing his reunion with Castiel just raises more questions. Questions that I fear will be answered with more heartache.

There are no happy endings in the world of Supernatural. Precious few of them in our little corner of the multiverse either.

And it looks like we’ve got another gutwrencher next week.
